Name of Assignment: Trigonometry Story Book
Subject: Geometry
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Marsh
Description of Work/Assignment:
Create a story book that applies trigonometry problems as plot points. There should be 3 different problems applying sine, cosine and tangent.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I believe this assignment addressed communication skills. I had quite a bit of trouble during our trigonometry unit, but by asking Ms. Marsh personally to analyze my problems I chose for my project, I was able to find out where I was making mistakes and how I could correct them. Had I not asked for help, I would have struggled to make my story accurate.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my use of technology through this project. In my early drafts of my project, I used pencil and paper, but after learning I could do my story book online, I decided to change up my project. I made use of transparent photos and layered them atop pictures of my cats to create engaging photos. I am really proud of how unique my project turned out and I was glad to include pictures of my cats.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved upon my communication skills through this project by properly asking for help when I needed it. I’ve always struggled with asking for help from teachers, but I really wanted to get a good grade on this project and properly understand the concepts so I wouldn’t be confused in the future as I continue through math.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part about this project was adapting after changing my project halfway through. I wanted to draw my entire project, but it proved to be quite difficult and wasn’t up to the standards I thought were acceptable. At first, using the computer to create my story was difficult, but I was able to learn my way around and create a pleasing project.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different?
To improve this project, I would have created a better story board. Having my ideas laid out first thing really helped me to build upon my story and find out what worked and what needed to be changed in my final project. However, if I were to redo this project, I would have started it online rather than on paper.
How does his relate to what you have learned in the past?
This project addressed the trigonometry unit we have been learning for the past few weeks. It touched upon all 3 types of functions used in trigonometry and had us apply them to real life situations like angles of staircases and distance between building walls and sidewalks.
How can you apply this to future learning?
This project helped me better understand trigonometry functions and made me more confident in continuing trigonometry. The creative aspect of this project helped me understand the importance of having a plan and knowing what to do if one aspect of a project doesn’t go according to plan. In the future, I think that I will be able to adapt to change, even if it is not in an academic setting.
