Name of Assignment: Junior Project
Subject: Junior Seminar
Facilitator/Teacher: Tara Lindsey
Description of Work/Assignment: Create a project that represents your passions while impacting your community. My project is called Diverse Books for Elementary Schoolers, which is all about introducing the 5th graders of Kihei Charter to books by diverse authors.
I believe that this assignment addresses communication skills as it pushed me to communicate through email with my mentor much more than I normally would. It also required me to keep in touch with my local librarian to get suggestions for books.
I am most proud of the communication skills I have developed during this project as well as my dedication to keep my project going each week. I used to be very wary about talking to teachers but through this project, I have gotten over this fear and now understand its importance.
During this assignment, I became much more inclined to reach out to teachers. Not only have I become close with my mentor, but I have also learned to reach out to my teachers in my regular classes. I have broken out of my shell and due to this project, I feel more prepared for the communication that will be key in my senior project.
The most difficult part of this task was working on my time management skills. During this project, I not only have had other high school classes to worry about, but also college classes and a job. I have found it difficult to make time to go to the library when I am working on other projects, but part of this project is prioritizing and working around other things, and to be consistent. Unfortunately during the week of student-led conferences, I had to take a week off of my project to focus on other projects, but I had to communicate with my mentor about this change.
If I could redo this project, I would have wanted to plan more about my final presentation. As of now, I’m not too sure about how I want to present my project to my class, as I’m not sure what I accomplished. I’m currently working on getting input from the students but since they aren’t very engaged, it might be difficult.
This project doesn’t necessarily relate to anything I have learned in the past, but it does reflect on some of the skills I have been taught by teachers throughout high school. I have always been reluctant to reach out to teachers, but over time, teachers like Ms. Shirkhodai and the old guidance counselor Ms. Amber, helped me realize that speaking up will help me in many aspects of my life, not just in school.
Due to this assignment, I have greatly improved my communication skills, and now I feel more confident about my senior project and emailing teachers and professors in general. Overall, I may not be impressed with what my project is, but I am impressed by what has come out of it skill-wise.
