Kihei Public Library: Summer Internship
For my internship, I worked at the Kihei Public Library as a volunteer over the summer of 2022. My mentor was Kathleen Ageton, and my main focus was to shelve books and prepare crafts to be given out to the kids who attended the library.
A memorable experience I had during my internship was my interaction with the kids who attended. Once, a little girl came up to me and asked me if she could help me with shelving books. I showed her how the lettering system works, and while she didn't understand it, she was so adamant to learn.
Something I will learn from this internship is communication. I was communicated with Kathleen frequently during my internship, however, when she was on her break, if I couldn't find something to do, I would walk around because I was too scared to ask another librarian for something to do. This ended up making my time there feel very long. However, near the end, I was able to find things to do even when Kathleen wasn't present.
I got a lot out of my internship, especially since literature is what I plan to study in college. It helped me greatly with my senior project that was inspired by this internship, and it got me motivated to put on the book fair to impact all the kids of KCS. Overall, I think my internship was perfect for me, as it stretched my limits, but also was something that I enjoyed doing.
