KCS Scholastic Book Fair (Senior Project)
My senior project was the KCS Scholastic Book Fair. It was a schoolwide event that gave students access to books for a reasonable price. I partnered with Scholastic, who provided the books, toys, and registers to run the event.
I was inspired to do this project after my summer internship at the Kihei Public Library. After seeing so many kids in the community excited to read, I wanted to bring this back to KCS. I knew the younger students would be excited to have an event at the school, so I figured combining literature with an event would be the perfect solution.
I chose this project as it connected with the students of KCS. My junior project centered around reading to 5th graders, and I knew I wanted to continue to work with younger students and create an event for them. I also chose this as it was based around the school, and it would be easy for me to work on either from home or just at the school.
This project had value to me as it encapsulated my love of reading and the importance it has on childhood development. This project impacted the community as it gave students a fun event to attend where they could buy new books and toys.

My major tasks I had to complete for this project were:
1. Confirm fair dates 2. Make meeting plans with my mentor Mrs. Federoff and Mrs. Baldridge 3. Call Coco Hennessey from Scholastic and discuss fair plans. 4. Contact the shipping company for drop off time of books. 5. Start recruiting volunteers. 6. Organize and move boxes delivered. 7. Make schedules for volunteers. 8. Set up book fair on Monday Dec 5th - 9th. In this project, I learned and challenged my communication skills. This project was the first time I truly had to connect with all members of the KCS staff. In the beginning of my project, I met Mrs. Federoff every time I was on campus, discussing planning. Mrs. Baldridge acted as my link to the lower division teachers and in turn, their students. However, the real connection with the students occurred during the fair week; when I had to help students navigate the fair and look for certain books. Mr. Zarro was also a huge help within the fair week. When I was struggling with my register, he walked me through the counting process. Without his guidance, I would have been lost within the economic process of this project. Not only did I connect with teachers within Charter, I connected with outside businesses, such as the shipping company and both Coco Hennessey and Holly Seibold with Scholastic. |
Overall, with the conclusion of my project (closing sales and returning leftover books and funds), the KCS book fair was able to raise $800 for our school (with over $4000 in sales).
One of our assignments in Senior Seminar was to measure our impact within our project. This was a tricky task for me, as I wasn't able to email the younger division students, and instead had to turn to my peers. From their viewpoint, specifically from younger siblings, the fair was a huge success due to the excitement they saw after they purchased their books at the book fair.
The intention of my project was truly to just get young KCS students excited about reading. While I was preoccupied with running the register during the event, I was able to catch the smiles on the kids faces as they navigated the fair. It is wonderful that KCS was able to gain money from this event, but I think the true mark of succession of my project was seeing a positive outcome within the younger division of students.
