Religion 150 : Judaism Holidays
For this assignment we had to research the Jewish high holidays and describe how they correlate to Jewish theology, or their conception of God. This paper wrapped up our unit on Judaism and acted as our proof of understanding of the religion. For my paper I discussed Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.
This assignment addresses the Thinking and Problem Solving 21st century skill as I had to apply my prior knowledge learned in class about Judaism and correlate its theology in relation to the high holidays. I had to analyze the foundation of these holidays and explain how they related to Judaism’s themes and conception of God. This became tricky as this was our first paper and I hadn’t quite understood the concept of theology just yet.
I developed my Thinking and Problem Solving skills through this assignment as I had never done extensive research about religions and I had to work around difficult language and dive into a type of writing I had never experienced before. I had to learn a whole new branch of terms such as theology and doctrine to write this paper and properly understand the topics we were studying and writing about.
I only got an 89% on this paper so I chose it to reflect on how I have grown since I submitted this paper in February. When I wrote this paper, I struggled to understand the concepts discussed in class, so writing a paper about something I didn’t understand proved to be very difficult. My professor turned back my paper with the notes “Good enough but there is room for more detail and analysis…” meaning that I had grasped the topic, but not in enough detail. As I reread my paper, I realized I spent most of my time describing the holidays rather than reflecting on theology as I was assigned to. In the future, I plan to stick directly to my assigned material and put emphasis on the analyzing portion of papers.
