Reflection:
The build a life project focused on creating a life once we graduate from college. We had to calculate our yearly and net income and create a monthly budget based on how much we make. We also took into account how student loans affected our budget and the importance of getting scholarships.
One valuable takeaway I gained from this project was that even getting a degree, right out of college you are not guaranteed an easy experience. From my project, even expanding my student loan payment to 40 years, I still cannot pay the monthly payment because my job is so low paying. I thought that with a college degree I’d at least be able to live with an income of $45,000, but unfortunately this is not the case.
I did find this project valuable, however it was very difficult and upsetting. Learning about in-state and out-of-state made a huge difference in my monthly bills, however I still could not live with my income. I ended up having $500 in debt per month which would add up quickly. This was intimidating as it is scary not knowing where you are going to get enough money to pay for these loans. I think this experience showed me that only being a writer straight out of college is not realistic and I will have to work another job on the side. I may even consider a different career that is associated with my degree.
I think in-state and out-of-state tuition could have been discussed more in this project as it is such a lifesaver when it comes to having lower student loans. With only in-state-tuition, my student loans dropped almost $1,000 monthly. I only learned about how important the difference in price was when Ms. Wilson approached me with the idea of taking a gap year and living in Utah before I attend college. Other than showing us more cost efficient options, I think this project was insightful and helped me prepare for my last year of high school.
I was most surprised by my student loans. I knew they were going to be expensive but I never imagined they would be over $1,000 per month. It was mortifying how much they dragged me down and even after having only monthly payments of $263 a month, it was still difficult for me to live this way.
I’m not sure if this question applies to myself now or in the future, so I’ll explain both. In this assignment I had to pay for renter’s insurance, trash and water payment, electricity, phone, internet, and health care bills. As of now, the only thing I pay for is my streaming services and I have bought both my computer and phone with my own money. I am willing to pay my phone bill once I graduate high school and start working more.
My starting salary was nowhere near enough to make a living in Utah. In this project I changed my entry into my college of course through in-state tuition (gap year), and yet it still was not enough to let me live easily. Some ideas to make more money as a writer would be to self publish my own book and create a blog. I think I would have a full-time job and do writing on the side if this career is this low paying.
I applied Financial, Economic, and Business Literacy Skills during this project as I had to discover what it means to be completely self-sufficient by working full time. I discovered how loans work, how bills are paid and how to find housing and cars. I navigated through the college websites and did research on different occupations. With all of these economical and financial skills, I am able to prepare for my life once I leave high school and work on my applications starting next year.
