DBQ Assessment:
Name of Assignment: DBQ Assessment
Subject: English 11 - Expository Writing/World History
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Terry
Description of Work/Assignment:
Create an essay that demonstrates the benefits of globalization since the end of World War 2 using prior knowledge taught in class and the sources given in the packet.
I believe this assignment addresses financial, economic and business literacy as it had to do with the overall impacts of globalization, which one of those was economical growth. One of my arguments in this assessment was the decrease in poverty since the end of world war 2, which sparked a huge change in the world economy.
I am most proud of my score for this assignment. We had to put our essays through an assessment grader and I got 4/4 for all categories but one. This was the first essay I wrote since my Sociology class last semester, and I was worried I would forget all I had learned from my college English class. I was surprised to see I even did well on this assessment because I felt so rusty and like I was making up claims that couldn’t be proven through my essay. Needless to say, my confidence was boosted by this grade.
I greatly improved upon my economic skills through this project. I didn’t even know about the decrease in poverty since the end of world war 2 until I read the articles associated with this assessment. This assignment not only taught me about the economic growth after the war, but the impacts it had on the people, the food industry, the flight industry and so much more. Almost everything after the war related to economic growth, which is something important that I will be able to bring up when discussing our economy.
The most difficult part about this task was the time limit. We had 1 hour and 10 minutes (one class period) to finish this essay, and while I was able to get it finished, I was very stressed before the class period knowing I would have to rush out an entire essay in this time period. I always try to get my homework done as soon as possible so I can stray away from feeling anxious about things being turned in. I tend to get really stressed if everything isn’t turned in, so I feel more at ease without a time limit, or a time limit within a few days rather than hours.
If I could redo this assessment, I would put more time into reading the sources provided to us. I spent a lot more time writing than I did reading, and I didn’t even get through the whole packet that was provided to us. I think I might have had a stronger argument if I had read more of the sources.
This essay is related to our major theme of globalization in history. I had to reference an old video from the class to get the definition of globalization to understand what it was I had to write about in our assessment. It didn’t directly correlate to what we had learned because we had focused on the 1400s rather than the early 1900s. However, these themes of globalization have been around for decades and will continue throughout the existence of humanity.
In the future I will be able to understand economic growth and its importance in our society. I can also now identify globalization clearly, so when we continue to learn about history, I can connect what is happening through the lens of globalization.
